January 2013: Festival Series

An edge-of-your-seat set of multi-genre chamber music. From Bach to Radiohead.

The 2013 Winter Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival comes to a close with a program of tremendous variety. J.S. Bach is perhaps the most prolific composer of all time. His Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 weaves together 9 independent melodic lines with seamless continuity. Some 270 years later, Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov deployed nine musicians in a completely different idiom. His nonet The Last Round distills the sounds and imagery of the Tango: the wheezing of the accordion-like bandoneon, the intricate interplay of entwined legs, and the macho posture of the tanguero. Tying the whole program together, renowned ensemble Sybarite5, fresh from their Carnegie Hall debut, will take the stage for a set of multi-genre chamber music. From Bach to Radiohead, Sybarite5 brings freshness and virtuosity to their innovative approach to music in the 21st Century.

Artists: Louis Levitt, Sami Merdinian, Laura Metcalf, Angela Pickett and Sarah Whitney as Sybarite5 along with Timothy Christie, Benjamin Gish, Julia Salerno, and Maria Sampen

The Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G Major, BWV 1048

WWCMF returns to the acoustically superior Foundry Vineyards Gallery to present one of the all-time-greatest-masterpieces-in-the-history-of-human-achievement… No hyperbole, we promise. The 6 Brandenburg Concertos by JS Bach represent some of the finest compositions of the Baroque, or any, period. Period. Tonight, the musicians of WWCMF will perform Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G Major, BWV 1048.

The story of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos is the stuff of an Antiques Roadshow dream. Presented by Bach to Christian Ludwig, the Margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt, in 1721, the 6 concertos lay unplayed in the Brandenburg archives until they were discovered in 1849. The opportunistic Siegfried Wilhelm Dehn purchased the 6 concertos for the extraordinarily paltry sum of $22 in today's money and published them within a year.

The Brandenburg Concertos contain some of the most recognizable music ever composed, thanks in part to present day advertisements, cartoons, films and all manner of pop culture references. Though sometimes relegated to the status of musical "Clip Art," the Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 ingeniously weaves together 9 independent melodic lines and represents both the ultimate in Baroque polyphony, and also our ability to hear it.

We'll unweave some of the harmonic tapestry and show you how it all comes together. Be sure to enjoy some Foundry Vineyards wine along the way, but don't stain the tapestry.

Artists: Louis Levitt, Sami Merdinian, Laura Metcalf, Angela Pickett and Sarah Whitney as Sybarite5 along with Timothy Christie, Benjamin Gish, Julia Salerno, Maria Sampen

January 2013: Tasting Music 1

Come in jeans, clap between movements, and get ready to rock!

In 2012, WWCMF rocked the Charles Smith Wines Tasting Room for the first time, presenting PROJECT Trio. In 2013, we are proud to present Sybarite5, winners of the prestigious 2011 Concert Artist Guild competition in New York City. Sybarite5 is a quintet consisting of 2 violins, viola, cello and double bass. Their influences span centuries of music from Baroque to classic rock to contemporary trendsetters like RADIOHEAD.

Sybarite5 represents the convergence of virtuosity and curiosity. They continue to explore new ways to make music, regardless of genre. At WWCMF, we believe passionately in the music of Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and company. We also believe that the music of these great composers is done a great disservice when it is dressed up in powdered wigs, tuxedos, and monocles (with optional mink stole, depending on the season)… Classical music, as it is widely known, is not set apart from other genres by anything other than the torturous etiquette that sometimes overtakes the performance itself.

By mining connections between the music of our place and time and the music of the past, Sybarite5 is reaching new audiences and spreading an infectious joy for great acoustic music. So come in jeans, clap between movements, and get ready to rock! What better place to catch a great acoustic set than Charles Smith Wines Tasting Room?

January 2013: Portrait of an Artist

This interactive series will give the you a window into the lives and experiences of the incredibly talented artists who perform here.

The Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival is proud to unveil the new Portrait of an Artist series. About 27 different artists perform at WWCMF annually. These artists, whether composer, string player, wind player, or vocalist etc., participate in the democratic process of working within a chamber ensemble. However, individually, each musician brings a unique perspective, and a level of personal artistry that sometimes goes unheralded. The Portrait of an Artist series gives the audience the opportunity to forge connections with individual musicians.

The series debuts with a recital and conversation with violinist, Maria Sampen. A veteran of every WWCMF season to date, Maria is a violinist of supernatural abilities. She is at home playing thorny contemporary scores just as she is playing solo Bach or backing up such pop icons as Rod Stewart. For this performance, Maria will be joined by pianist, and local Walla Wallan, Kristin Vining.

This interactive series will give the audience a window into the lives and experiences of the incredibly talented artists who come to Walla Walla for the Festival. Join us at the Sinclair Estate Vineyard Tasting Room, and meet your music maker!
